Frequently Asked Questions
Q How do I choose which tests are suitable for my study?
The exact battery of tests you use will depend on the hypotheses of your study, the cognitive domains you are interested in measuring, your patient/volunteer population and any pharmacological agents being investigated. Our tests also contain different modes which are used to measure different research questions or patient populations. For expert advice on which tests would be most appropriate for your trial, please contact a member of our science team.
Q Can I use CANTAB technology to assess cognitive domains?
Yes. CANTAB technology is the leading software for the assessment of cognition and has been used to investigate over 100 separate cognitive disorders. The cognitive domains assessed using CANTAB technology include memory, attention, processing speed, visuospatial function and executive function. We have also developed tests of immediate and delayed verbal recall and recognition memory, and emotional decision making tests to assess information processing, impulse control and risk-taking.
Q Can I retest participants using CANTAB technology?
The majority of our CANTAB tests can be used for repeat testing. If you are using CANTAB Research Suite, some of the tests will have ‘parallel modes’ which allow a different set of stimuli to be used for each different participant visit. Stimuli allocation is automatic in CANTAB Connect, preventing the need to choose parallel modes. Instead, the system will automatically choose new stimuli for each new visit a participant completes.
Some tasks, such as the Intra/Extra Dimensional Shift (IED) task cannot be used for repeat testing. Speak to one of our customer services team for help and advice regarding repeat testing.
Additionally, All CANTAB tests have satisfactory levels of test-retest reliability, with some outcome measures reaching test-retest correlations of around 0.9.
For advice on retesting please contact a member of our science team.
Q What normative data does CANTAB technology contain?
The CANTAB normative database contains data from healthy individuals aged 4 - 90 years and spanning four different estimated IQ bands. It is built into our CANTAB Research Suite product for some but not all tests, allowing researchers to accurately calculate standardised scores from subjects' raw test scores. Normative data is not currently available for CANTAB Connect Research.
Our normative data is for guidance purposes only and does not substitute a control group. Where normative data is available it was originally collected in the ‘Clinical’ variant of the test. If you would like to compare to the normative data the Clinical variant must be used, however there may be other task variants which are more suited for your research. Please contact the Support Team for more information.
Normative data should never be used as a replacement for a matched control sample in research, watch our video to find out more.
Q Where can I find literature on CANTAB tests?
Search the CANTAB bibliography for details of all the papers that have been published using the CANTAB tests. The search functionality allows you to search on a number of different criteria, including test, therapeutic area and publication.
Q How were the CANTAB tests originally developed?
CANTAB tests were developed based on animal paradigms to facilitate cross-species studies of cognition. The tests have been validated in behavioural and psychopharmacological studies in healthy human volunteers and in a range of patient groups.
Q What languages are available for CANTAB?
The stimuli used in the CANTAB tasks are language-free and abstract so that cultural background should not influence performance on the tasks.
CANTAB Connect Research
The instructions in CANTAB Connect Research are administered via an automatic voiceover which is currently available in the following languages:
- Arabic (Gulf/Khaliji)
- Arabic (Israeli)
- Brazilian Portuguese
- English (US)
- European Spanish
- Gulf Arabic (Khaliji)
- Latin American Spanish
- Traditional Chinese (Hong Kong)
- Traditional Chinese (Taiwan)
Some of these languages are not available for Verbal Recognition Memory (VRM) please contact us to find out which.
Further voiceover translations are available upon request. Please contact us for a quote.
CANTAB Research Suite
A researcher is required to administer the instructions using a standardised script. The task scripts are provided in English in the Test Administration Guide, and are available in some other languages upon request. Please contact Customer Services for more information.
The tasks that include a language component are Affective Go/No Go (AGN), Verbal Recognition Memory (VRM) and Visual Analogue Scales (VAS). These tests have been translated into a number of different languages; please contact Customer Services for further information.
Q How do I reference the CANTAB software?
When referencing CANTAB in your research, please use the following:
CANTAB® [Cognitive assessment software]. Cambridge Cognition (2016). All rights reserved. www.cantab.com
Q Which iPad models is CANTAB Connect Research validated for?
Our primary iPad model for running CANTAB Connect Research is the 9.7inch iPad Pro.
Secondary models have also been validated, please contact customer services to find out which.
